A wood that floats has no roots
Open any Bazi chart and the first thing to know is that it is a timestamp, not a personality quiz. The classical image is 木浮水上 — a piece of wood floating on water. A Wood day master born into a chart heavy with Water has nothing underfoot; the old texts say such a person "drifts across lakes and seas." The point is not mystical. It is that your chart describes the conditions you were born into, and those conditions decide whether your core element stands on solid ground or floats. One image teaches more about how Bazi thinks than a shelf of definitions.
Eight characters, four moments
Your birth time is written as four pairs of characters — Year, Month, Day, Hour. Each pair is one Heavenly Stem plus one Earthly Branch, and the eight together are the "Eight Characters." Two people can share a birthday and still get different charts, because the hour and the birthplace longitude change the result. The chart is just a precise record of when you entered the world, written in a sixty-cycle calendar that has run for two thousand years.
The Day Master is the "you" reference
Among the eight, the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar is the Day Master — the reference point everything else is measured against. It is the element that is "you": Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water, in a Yang or Yin form. A Yang Wood day master reads like a tall tree; a Yin Wood like grass and vines. Every later judgment — strength, useful element, the ten gods — is defined relative to this one character, the way a compass is meaningless until you know where north is.
Four pillars, four layers of a life
Each pillar carries a different job. The Year is broadest and least personal — the generation and background you were born into, and it changes for everyone at once. The Month is weighted most heavily in classical reading: your season, and the source of your strength. The Day holds you in its stem and your closest counterpart in its branch, which is why it is read as the adult-self and marriage pillar. The Hour is the narrowest and most private — late life, children, and what you are like when nobody is watching. Same eight characters, four very different distances from the surface.

Here is the part most introductions skip. Bazi is not a prediction you take on faith. Its value is that it encodes your past as well as your tendencies: the years you have already lived each carry a stem-branch pair, and a reading should be able to say something true about them.
